Let's drink to salute our fallen soldiers

This is for our fallen soldiers, we miss you…
Memorial Day is here and even though it is a long weekend and a very nice, much needed day off for everyone, for some it is a somber day of remembrance for those brave soldiers that made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. For those that know me, they know I’m not the most patriotic person out there but after working for so long with organizations that service military vets and spouses, I’m very much aware. So let’s take a moment to pay respect to our soldiers.
Lesson learned this week: Uno Reverse your interviews
This was more of a moment from last week that came from a coaching call with someone that was interviewing for a DEI role at a major HR tech company. This will be a highly visible role at a company that is supposedly true to their values. I told him “Why don’t you ask them if they are considering internal candidate? That way, you can gauge if you want to invest more time and energy into this process.”
And his mind was BLOWN!
He then followed up with “Are you sure I could ask that?”
And I said “Of course, you have nothing to lose by finding out! Worse case scenario is they either lie or they dodge your question. It’s a great litmus test to see if they actually stick to their values of transparency!”
With that, here are some other great questions to ask in your next interview to see if that opportunity is right for you:
Why is there an opening?
What is the timeline looking like to fill this position?
How do you handle making any kind of cuts?
When was the last time you had to conduct layoffs?
How involved is senior leadership?
What is your management style?
What resources do you have available to ensure I’m set up for success? (e.g. budget, tools, other team members - if they don’t have much, you will be expected to do a lot on your own so proceed with caution!)
What are the biggest goals you have for this role?
What is the onboarding process like?
How can I help you make you look good in front of your boss?
If someone isn’t performing as well as they could, what measures are taken to course correct?
When asking these questions, or getting answers naturally during the conversation, you’ll have a much better understanding if the role is right for you.

A not so skilled interviewer may be blindsided by this advanced technique, so play the card wisely!
Pour one out/drink to Nico Murillo, one of the thousands of talented Tesla folks impacted by thoughtless layoffs
Tesla has had turbulent times to say the least, especially as thousands of people unceremoniously lost their jobs. The most recent noteworthy exit was Mr. Murillo, who was LIVING in his car that was parked in the factory parking lot…and he STILL got axed.

This kind of dedication rarely, if ever, gets rewarded
The silver lining for Mr. Murillo is that he leverage this fame to create a YouTube channel that now has about 20k subs AND he apparently become a manager at GNC, so kudos to him for pivoting!
Let’s drink to the rest of the Tesla employees impacted by layoffs and let this also be a grim lesson that you should never go the extra mile for a company like this, because they will NEVER do the same for you.
