Wine Down Friday #1
Table of Contents
Happy Friday everyone! Another week is down and I have launched this newsletter. My goal for this newsletter is to make short, sweet, and snackable content for you to enjoy...like having a glass of wine with some fruit, cheese, and crackers. So sit back and grab your fave glass of wine to unwind as we get ready for the weekend!
Just to give you all a heads up: I’m a HUGE Reddit-holic. So be prepared to see some crossposts from the site!
The lesson I learned this week ending 5/17
I do a lot of interview coaching, but I also have my biases as a job seeker sometimes. And I always used to HATE being asked “Why do you want to work here?” because no response would ever be genuine. That is, until I stumbled upon this Reddit post that made me change my whole perspective that this question is indeed a test of how much tact and grace you have when being asked objectively dumb questions.
This was a BIG lesson not just for me, but for anyone else interviewing.
Let’s numb the pain for the folks at Walmart as they say goodbye to remote work as well as the 1,000 that got laid off from Indeed.
Boo Walmart for being greedy and forcing attrition by mandating RTO. That’s really what’s going on here, let’s not kid ourselves into thinking they love the office that much. Profits have never been higher and due to the not recession, buying power is reduced. So how do companies keep those profits high? They cut costs by cutting back on labor hence this quiet fire. Read more about the change here.
And of course, we can’t have it be a quasi-recession without seeing yet another layoff, this one from Indeed as 1,000 folks got cut this week. Read more about the cut here.
Let’s pour one out and have a drink in sympathy for anyone negatively impacted by these changes at Walmart and Indeed!
Raise our glasses/pour one out for Mary Wells Lawrence, the OG Mad Woman
The ad world lost an icon last weekend as Mary Wells Lawrence passed at 95. She was the creative force behind groundbreaking campaigns such as creating the iconic “I ❤️ NY” slogan for the state of New York back in 1977 and was also the inspiration of Peggy Olson in the hit show Mad Men. She was also the first female CEO of a publicly traded company!
She was a trailblazer that paved the way for so many women like myself to be in the ad world today, may she rest in power and cheers to Mary once again.
Read more about her passing and legacy in this NY Times article.
Thanks for paving the way Mary
That’s it for now, see you next week! Let’s stay connected on LinkedIn and send me a note at [email protected] if you want to learn more about the newsletter or even submit something! Or visit my site at www.themillennialcareercoach.com
